The Nissan A15 is one of Nissan's hidden gems. The Nissan A15 offers good fuel economy, power, and reliability for many older models of cars, given that they are still producing these motors today, even if just for Nissan Z cars and Nissan 240sx models. The Nissan A15 was initially meant to be replaced by the Nissan KA24E, but Nissan gave them life until 2005 instead of 1993 as expected due to hiccups with their switch in engines. The Nissan A15 is a great little engine Nissan made very few improvements over its time of service to offer something different and stand out from other Nissan engines and produce an affordable product for many years. Still, Nissan did make the A15 engine turbocharged across all Nissan vehicles equipped with this engine. The Nissan A15 also has a relatively high compression ratio at 8:1, which is not overly powerful. This is an overhead camshaft valvetrain layout like many other Nissan engines, which means that the distributor does not sit in between camshafts instead, they are located on either side of the block along with the oil pump. The Nissan A15 engine has several features which distinguish it from other Nissan engines, some good and some bad. Nissan had more problems with their Nissan A10 and Nissan A12 line of motors, but that is another story for another time Nissan continued producing the A15 engine until 2005, when Nissan discontinued it after they decided to make one unified Nissan motor across all of their vehicles (Nissan KA24E engine) Characteristics of Nissan A15 Nissan soon realized that they needed to be more efficient in manufacturing and leading customers when allocating resources, so they stopped making two versions of their A15 engines.
Initially, Nissan released vehicles such as the Nissan Altima and Nissan Maxima utilizing two different types of Nissan A15s: one type was equipped with a turbocharger while the other was not. However, Nissan had some unforeseen hiccups with their switch of engines which led them to continue producing these motors long after they were due for replacement. Nissan gave the Nissan A15 a few boosts in power over this period, but it remained very similar specs throughout its 20 years of production. Nissan continued producing this engine throughout the 1980s and even the early 1990s until 1993 when Nissan decided to swap the Nissan A15 engine and Nissan A10 and Nissan A12 motors. This year also saw the release of vehicles that utilized this motor, such as the Nissan Sentra and Datsun Maxima. The Nissan A15 engine was first introduced in 1982 as a 1.5L inline four-cylinder configuration with a base compression ratio of 8:1 and fuel injection standard across all models. Nissan has improved upon this engine dramatically since its creation, but it still holds to the design concept of an overhead camshaft valvetrain layout.
